Akinyemi OMONIJO, the newly elected Chairperson of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (ASUU-FUOYE) branch was born and grew up in Ise-Ekiti, Ekiti State in western Nigeria. He graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Meteorology from the Federal University of Technology Akure, Nigeria in 2000 and completed his M.Sc and PhD in Environmental Management in 2008 and 2012 at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (formerly University of Agriculture, Abeokuta). He taught at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo between June 2003 and August 2014 before joining the Department of Water Resources Management and Agrometeorology at Federal University Oye-Ekiti in September 2014.

In 2009, he was awarded an European Science Foundation conference grant to South Africa and in the same year, he received a capacity building support grant from IHDP/ESSP/IGU at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; during this programme he received an award for the best poster presentation. In 2010, he was awarded an International Climate Protection fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation which he undertook at the Chair, of Meteorology and Climatology, Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg, Germany and he was one of the recipients of 2011 African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship offered by APHRC & IDRC.

In 2012, Akinyemi Omonijo served as a climate scientist consultant to WHO/TDR in TDR-EU FP7 Research Programme on dengue project. In 2013, he received Capacity Building grant from The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics and in the same year, he was in Israel as a participant in the Environmental Management programme of the Galilee International Management Institute. In 2016, he was awarded an Early Career grant of the Future Earth for Cross community workshop on Extreme Events and Environments from Climate to Society, held at The Max Planck Institute, Berlin. In the months of September to November 2016, he was a visiting researcher at Geographisches Institut / Department of Geography at the Humboldt University of Berlin.

The young and dynamic Chairperson of ASUU-FUOYE is a scholar who has been engaged in a series of studies in the field of the applications of climate science and global environmental change. He has published results of his research works in peer-reviewed journals and attended important international scientific meetings.

My desire as Chairperson Academic Staff Union of Universities, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (ASUU-FUOYE) branch

The general well-being of the University community is my desire as Chairperson Academic Staff Union of Universities, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (ASUU-FUOYE) branch. It is my wish that the University move forward. It is my wish that all of us are brought to a level of consciousness and knowledge to know and do what is right at all times. It is my wish that all of us at FUOYE will do what is right according to law and right conscience; it is my wish that we will know how to exercise our right without fear or favour. It is my desire to see a University where there is equal opportunity for all and a University where no man is oppressed. Conclusively, I wish that FUOYE will operate according to the letters of the University’s regulations and the law.

Dr. Omonijo’s leadership is ably supported by Dr. Mbachaga Desen Jonathan as General Secretary, Dr Oyelaran Olatunde Ajani as welfare Secretary as well as Olaniyan Olayayo Moses, Treasurer (for now).
